When faced with an enclosed courtyard in a 1970’s brown brick unit complex with a view of a dilapidated garage from their only living and dining space, we were called on to find a workable design solution, having designed and constructed a previous courtyard for the clients.

With a deep appreciation for classical style and art, the brief was to create a garden for viewing the seasons, with a flavor reminiscent of the South American birthplace of the owner. Facing north-west, solar control was also an important issue to consider.

The design implemented, called for a living, deciduous tree pergola trained to a grid pattern of stainless steel overhead wires. Not only did this provide summer shade and cooling, but also spring flowering and autumn russet tones. Irrigation, drainage and lighting were installed prior to planting.

Additional plantings included low hedging, espaliered citrus, and terracotta pots of seasonal color.

Stone diagonal paving was laid on two levels, trellis installed to screen perimeter walls, and to frame the massive central urn ornamentation. All exposed brick walls were rendered, and terracotta toned awnings installed.

A dull, dated courtyard has been transformed into a magical South American garden retreat, bringing seasonal change into a tiny oasis.
